TidyPepple questions and answers

Everything you need to know about the Getting Things Done app TidyPepple: what it costs, how it works offline, how to install it on iPhone, Android or the desktop, and how encryption protects your tasks.

What is TidyPepple?

TidyPepple is a minimalist task manager based on the Getting Things Done method (GTD) that runs in the browser and installs on phone and computer. It offers an inbox, a Next list, projects, contexts and a board – offline and without tracking.

What is Getting Things Done (GTD)?

Getting Things Done is a productivity method by David Allen in which you move every open loop out of your head into a trusted system. It has five steps: capture, clarify, organise, reflect and engage.

TidyPepple maps exactly these steps – quick capture and the inbox, statuses and contexts, the Next list for getting things done, and All, Projects and the board for the weekly review.

Is TidyPepple free?

Yes. On a single device TidyPepple is completely free and needs no account – no feature limits and no ads. Only the optional sync subscription for keeping several devices in step costs money: €1.95 a month or €19.50 a year, including 19% German VAT (net €1.64 or €16.39; outside Germany your local VAT rate applies at checkout).

That works because the app is local-first: if you don't sync, you never touch a server and cause no running costs.

Does TidyPepple work offline?

Yes, completely. The app stores everything in your browser's local database and only needs the network for the first load, for updates and – if you subscribe – for sync. In flight mode it works exactly as online; changes are sent once you are connected again.

How do I install TidyPepple on iPhone, Android or the desktop?

Open the app in your browser and add it to your home screen – no app store needed. On iPhone and iPad use Safari → Share → “Add to Home Screen”, on Android use Chrome's menu → “Install app”, and on the desktop use the install icon in the address bar of Chrome or Edge.

How secure is my data when syncing?

It is end-to-end encrypted: the server stores only ciphertext and cannot read titles, notes, contexts or attachments. Encryption happens on your device with AES-256-GCM; the key is protected by your passphrase (Argon2id) and a recovery key.

The flip side: if you lose both your passphrase and your recovery key, nobody can restore the data on the server – not even us.

How do I set up sync?

It takes a few minutes and needs no password – just your email address. You'll find everything in the app under Settings → Sync:

  1. Buy the subscription: choose monthly or yearly and complete the order. The email address you enter is your key to the subscription from now on – remember it.
  2. Confirm your email address: shortly after, a message with a confirmation link arrives at exactly that address. One click is all it takes.
  3. Sign in: next you'll receive a sign-in link. Open it on the device you want to sync.
  4. Choose a passphrase: finally, pick a passphrase of at least 10 characters. It encrypts your tasks before they leave your device. You also get a one-time recovery key – write both down and keep them somewhere safe.

Done: from now on your devices stay in step automatically.

How do I get my data back on a new device?

Easily – whether you got a new phone, are adding another device or your browser data was cleared. You don't need to buy anything again:

  1. Open TidyPepple and go to Settings → Sync.
  2. Enter the email address you bought the subscription with and tap “Send sign-in link”.
  3. Click the link in the email – that signs you in, there is no password.
  4. Enter your passphrase. Your tasks are downloaded and decrypted again.

You can do this as often as you like. The one thing you need is your passphrase: without it your data cannot be decrypted – not even by us. If you've forgotten it, your recovery key gets you back in.

What happens to my data when the sync subscription ends?

Nothing is lost. All data stays on your devices, and you can still download everything from the server and set up a new device. Only uploading new changes pauses; they wait on the device and are sent automatically once you subscribe again.

Do I need an account?

No, free use on one device needs neither an account nor a sign-in. Only for sync do you sign in with your email address via a sign-in link; there is no password stored with the provider.

What do @, #, ! and > mean when capturing?

They are shortcuts for quick capture: @ sets a context, # adds the task to a project, ! sets the due date, > the defer date, and a standalone !! marks it as important. Example: “Call Bob @phone #Move !tomorrow”.

All of it is optional; anything the app doesn't understand stays in the title.

How does a task become a project?

Automatically, as soon as it has two open steps. Add steps in a task's detail view; from the second one on it appears under Projects. Alternatively, “Treat as project” makes a task a project explicitly, even with a single step.

Can I export my tasks?

Yes. Under Settings → Data you export all tasks and contexts as a JSON file and can restore such a backup at any time. Attachments are not included in the JSON backup.

Can I attach files to tasks?

Yes, images and PDFs up to 5 MB per file and 200 MB in total. Photos are scaled down before saving. Without sync, attachments stay on the device; with sync they are stored encrypted on the server and only downloaded on another device when you open the task.

How do I get updates?

Automatically. The app downloads new versions in the background and then shows a “New version available” hint; clicking “Reload” activates it. You are never interrupted mid-capture, and updates need no app store either.

Is TidyPepple available in German?

Yes. The interface is available in English and German; by default it follows your browser language and can be set per device under Settings → Language. The capture syntax understands English and German dates.

Your tasks belong to you

No tracking, no ads, no behavioural analytics. Without sync your tasks never leave the device; with sync they leave it only encrypted. The details are in the privacy policy.
